James T. Hodgkinson, the 66-year-old Bernie Sanders supporter who shot and wounded five people, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, was a diehard Rachel Maddow fan who hated “the rich.”
In a letter to the editor dated July 8, 2012, he declared his love for the MSNBC anchor’s weeknight show.
“One of my favorite TV shows is ‘The Rachel Maddow Show’ on MSNBC,” he said. “On a recent show she stated that 17 very rich men are supplying the Republican Party with more than 60 percent of their campaign contributions.”
“These men are trying to buy our country,” he continued. “You know they expect something for all this money. That something is that Mitt Romney and a Republican Congress won’t raise their taxes. We all know that the rich don’t pay enough taxes.”
As GotNews revealed, Hodgkinson also liked Maddow’s Facebook page, along with John Oliver’s.
On April 17, 2012, an Associated Press photographer took a picture of Hodgkinson holding a protest sign reading: “TAX the RICH, Like Congress Did for 70 Years / Till Reagan’s ‘Trickle Down’ / We Need / ’20 Brackets-$20 Million.”
Is Maddow’s rhetoric radicalizing angry liberals like Hodgkinson, whose Facebook profile was filled with invective such as “It’s Time to Destroy Trump and Co.”?
Did Maddow’s railing against “the rich” further enrage Hodgkinson? For years, Hodgkinson posted cartoons on Facebook attacking Republicans.
Maddow has been mostly silent on Twitter since the shooting.
Will @MSNBC apologize for radicalizing the Alexandria Assassin?
