Highly-paid CEO of the “worst veterans charity” in America John Thomas Burch, who was simultaneously working for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), has been fired from his position as a deputy director at the VA’s Office of General Counsel for “disgraceful” conduct and for “misusing” both his position and taxpayer resources to enrich himself.
Burch, who literally fled in a Rolls Royce with “MY ROLLS” vanity plates when a CNN camera crew tried to confront him, was exposed for having two jobs back in May.
A government investigation that began into him then has now been completed and “the process for Mr. Burch’s removal from federal service” has been “initiated.”
Burch was founder, President, and Chairman of the National Vietnam Veterans Foundation (NVVF) until it was shut down in August. Burch’s charity gave less than 2% of the donations it got to actual veterans.
Charity Navigator gave it a zero star (out of four stars) rating.
Burch was also exposed as lying about his military service: while claiming to be a “special forces” Green Beret that served in Vietnam, Burch was actually just a JAG officer — a military lawyer — serving with a special forces unit.
Burch was running both his own zero-star veterans charity and working for the Department of Veterans Affairs for a staggering 15 years before he was found out. While collecting a six-figure salary from the federal government, Burch got hundreds of thousands of dollars in “unjustifiable” perks from his “charity.” Take a look:
After being exposed, Burch was force to pay fines, shut down the charity, and publicly apologize:
The government investigation concluded that Burch’s behavior as chief of the NVVF was “disgraceful” conduct, “prejudicial” to the government.
The report showed how Burch would use his position at the VA to promote the National Vietnam Veterans Foundation, especially by hosting joint VA-NVVF events, then use those events as a justification for a higher salary for his work as CEO of the NVVF — which he got, multiple times.
It concluded Burch broke numerous regulations relating to good conduct and misuse of government position and resources.
He “not only elevated the status and exposure of NVVF […] but he also personally enriched himself”, according to the report.

Burch even got an unpaid intern to work for him as part of his VA position, then paid her using NVVF funds to do NVVF work during regular work hours. He later hired her full-time to work for the NVVF.
Burch made almost 5 phone calls relating to NVVF work every single day on average, according to the report. This all while he was supposed to be an attorney working for the Department of Veterans Affairs!
It’s no wonder that President-elect Donald J. Trump was elected on a platform that included “draining the swamp” that is Washington, D.C.
