With thanks to Alexander Perkins who helped on this story.
It looks like Gawker Media was fooled by an elaborate con man, GotNews.com can report. Update at 12:01 AM PST: We’re running even more on this in a new post.
GotNews.com has independently confirmed that the alleged male escort at the center of the Geithner-Gawker imbroglio. His name, at least according to this HourBoy account, is Brodie Sinclair a.k.a. Derek Truitt–assuming, of course, that this is true.
We have reason to doubt it all.
Here’s the basic story:
Gawker allegedly helped an anonymous “Ryan” tell a story about how he was going to have gay sex with the married, straight David Geithner, CFO of Conde Nast.
Geithner allegedly chickened out and wouldn’t help “Ryan” with his Housing & Urban Development (HUD) so “Ryan” allegedly declined to go to Chicago to have sex with Geithner.
The Internet is now pissed off about this and rightly so.
The smoking gun here is the photo from the bottom of the page that was used and blurred out in the Gawker story.
Why wouldn’t “Brodie” send Geithner an original dick pic?
I don’t that this whole thing is real.
As, in, I think this whole story is an elaborate hoax to fool and humiliate Gawker. It also seems to have ensnared U.S. Senator Ted Cruz’s office, according to the Gawker story.
He also sought help from his local senator, Ted Cruz. On April 7 of this year, Cruz’s office sent Ryan a letter telling him that they had “initiated an inquiry” with HUD on Ryan’s behalf. On May 6, Ryan received another letter from Cruz’s office, stating that HUD had made a “final determination” on his case in May 2014, at which point HUD closed his case. Enclosed was a letter from a HUD field office director, stating that HUD could not initiate any further investigation into Ryan’s case unless he provided “new and relevant information.” Ryan felt this response was insufficient, and that several government agencies had sided with his landlord in discriminating against him because of his sexuality. (Cruz’s office has continued to stay in touch with Ryan, he tells us. He says that an employee of Cruz’s called him this afternoon to say that the senator had personally called the HUD director on his behalf. It seems as if Cruz, in the midst of his Presidential campaign, sees an opportunity to help a veteran with PTSD who has been crushed by Washington bureaucracy.)
Conde Nast CFO David Geithner denies the gay sex texts:
“After being informed of this story, Geithner provided the following statement to Gawker:
I don’t know who this individual is. This is a shakedown. I have never had a text exchange with this individual. He clearly has an ulterior motive that has nothing to do with me.”
Here‘s another ad also ostensibly connected with the story.
We reached out to the number in the ad.
We called “Brodie Sinclair” at the number above and asked if he had any contact with Senator Cruz’s office and if he was the Ryan from the Gawker story.
He quickly hung up.
We then carried on a text message.
Here’s that exchange.
Either the person (or people) is/are entirely a fool and crazy or this has been a plot to smear Gawker or this is a Russian troll or this is something totally crazy.
Some theories: I think the entire thing is made up to ensnare Gawker after the hit piece that Gawker wrote about Reddit earlier today.
This is why you should arrange all of your anonymous gay sex hook ups on Wickr.
P.S. I don’t know why GotNews.com seems to have a comparative advantage exposing dick pics of nefarious actors but there you have it. Economics 101. Hey, Andrew Breitbart made a career out of congressional cock so I guess it’s in keeping with his legacy.
P.P.S If Twitter hadn’t censored me I would have broken this motherfucker wide open sooner. Fuck you, Jack Dorsey and DeRay McKesson.
P.P.P.S. Go fuck yourself, Nick Denton.
