Five supporters of President Donald J. Trump were forcibly removed from the board of New York City’s elite Upper East Side Metropolitan Republican Club Tuesday night, in what was dubbed “a Moscow trial” by one observer.
With some in the room calling for clarification of exactly what was happening at the meeting, and others asking if the club’s constitution was being followed, two insider board members demanded that anyone asking questions be forcibly thrown out. It was moved and seconded.
The not-yet-elected club Secretary Jeff Charles Goolsby looked up from the official minutes and in a supportive echo yelled out “Forcibly!”
The leadership of the Metropolitan Republican Club has been slow in accepting the success of President Donald J. Trump over the past year, and this meeting was no different. Club President Deb Coughlin, former club President Peter Hein, a son of a former club President – Bob Morgan III, and Ian Walsh Reily led a charge on cleansing the board of the five Trump supporters.
When asked why bylaws weren’t being followed, the Republican club’s President Deb Coughlin, growing red in the face, dismissed the idea that bylaws would apply to her, saying “best practices” were being followed: “That’s right, best practices.” According to the FEC, Deborah Coughlin is a long time donor to Friends of Schumer, the principle campaign committee for Democrat Chuck Schumer, New York’s senior Senator and the current Senate Minority Leader.
Under concern of conflicts of interest, the meeting was turned over at its start to be chaired by insider Frederic Umane, a well-connected New York Attorney with a full-time position as President of the controversy-plagued New York Board of Elections.
As Umane repeatedly insisted the bylaws were being followed, long time board member Michael Javelos brought a list of violations of the bylaws to the front. Javelos, requesting that the void and inconsistent Nominating Committee report be addressed at this annual meeting before voting take place was answered by meeting chairman Umane loudly with “I’ll take it, I’ll throw it in the garbage!”
“Disgusting what’s happening tonight. The insiders ought to be ashamed of themselves. They’d be happier with everyone in this club wearing pink hats,” commented Met Club member Allan Stevo.
The violation of the bylaws came as no surprise. Long into the fall of 2016, some of the same politically connected Executive Committee members at the Republican Club could be heard hoping that Hillary Clinton would become the 45th President of the United States.
By meeting’s end, long time political activists and donors Michael Javelos, Georgia Palmieri, Alain Palmieri, Allan Stevo, and Sandra Chase were removed from the Executive Committee of the club.

“Chuck Schumer won this battle, but Donald Trump is winning the war,” was overheard as members walked out the door of the century-old club that Theodore Roosevelt helped found.
