Anti-Trump Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal of Saudi Arabia has been arrested on corruption charges, per local reports. Talal is a billionaire who owns over three-percent of Twitter.
Moreover, Talal has a history of making virulently anti-Trump comments. During the pre-election period in 2015 and 2016, he regularly criticized then-candidate Trump, making jokes about the Republican frontrunner’s financial situation and the way his campaign was being run. Talal also made bold predictions of an electoral landslide in favor of Hillary Clinton, a prediction that was never realized.
On December 11th, 2015, Trump called Talal a “Dopey Prince” on Twitter, warning him that he would not be able to control American politicians anymore when the Trump Administration became a reality:
Earlier that day, Talal had taken to Twitter to tell Trump to “withdraw from the US presidential race as you will never win,” calling the New York real estate mogul “a disgrace not only to the GOP but to all of America.”
President Trump has consistently attacked Saudi Arabia for its stance on human rights and for its sponsoring of terrorism in the West. Additionally, the President has been unwilling to engage in the kind of doublespeak that characterizes D.C. politics: he has called out Sharia law in Saudi Arabia when denouncing other countries in the region – a move other politicians, Republicans and Democrats alike, would never dare to make.
So, while President Trump’s tweet to Talal that he would no longer be able to “control our U.S. politicians with daddy’s money” was hilarious, it also likely contained more than a kernel of truth about the fundamental change would ensue if he won the election.
Furthermore, President Trump’s commitment to “extreme vetting” and a heightened focus on national security has led the administration to a review of its relationships with a host of countries – many of them in the Middle East. Indeed, it appears that one of Talal’s greatest concerns is that the President’s dream of an ‘American First’ approach to foreign affairs will rightly make Saudi Arabia accountable for its promotion of terrorism and Islamic extremism abroad, and corruption at home.
Just today, President Trump took to Twitter to push Saudi Arabia to do Aramco’s Initial Public Offering (IPO) with the New York Stock Exchange, which would be a boon to the American economy.
It appears this sort of accountability is underway.
