4chan posters say owner Hiroyuki Nishimura and moderator Jay Irwin are data-mining the image board for their information—raising questions about why Nishimura turned down GotNews editor-in-chief Charles C. Johnson’s offer to purchase the site.
How it works: Nishimura allegedly uses one of his businesses to profit from mining data from 4chan, by selling users’ data to at least one company whose stock rose after Nishimura bought the site.
“Brazil Future Search” is reportedly Hiroyuki’s search engine company specializing in real-time search solutions. They currently provide search for Niconico Douga [Japan’s version of YouTube] and 2ch.sc [a version of 2ch.net] and others,” a tip on Nishimura’s activities states.
Step 1: Brazil Future Search will make a real-time search engine for 4chan text data only. They will forgo images because images are not important in data mining.
Step 2: The new 4chan search engine will provide data to Effyis (boardreader.com).
Step 3: Boardreader.com will add 4chan search to their board search.
Step 4: Effyis (boardreader.com) will provide a firehose of data to Hottolink (their parent company) to use in data mining.
Step 5: American companies will begin purchasing analytics data from Hottolink.
Step 6: There is no step 6, you have already had your data sold to the highest bidder.
Read the complete breakdown compiled by a sleuth here:
Irwin, also known as “Swaglord” and “Invisibro,” works for a data company that boasts of analyzing “billions of conversations per day.”
Johnson offered to buy 4Chan from Nishimura in October. “Why does he want to reduce the service and keep it when we will buy it?” Johnson asked. He received no answer about his proposal.
Now we may know why: It appears Nishimura thinks it’s more valuable keep control of 4chan to pull data on users than sell the company in an above-board business deal.
