In the latest move from the anti-Trump Metropolitan Republican Club, longtime Democratic Party supporters at the club are attempting to solidify their takeover of the century-old Upper East Side New York political club.
GotNews has learned that a secret meeting of the executive committee is scheduled for this Tuesday night at 6:45 PM to vote on changes in the Club bylaws.
The only problem: virtually no one on the trustee board has even ever seen the bylaws.
“We have been told to show up Tuesday to vote on the bylaws. No one has ever seen these bylaws. I don’t know why they have been pushing us to vote on something we’ve never seen,” said one board member.
While Club officers Deb Coughlin, Ian Walsh Reilly, and Jeff Charles Goolsby all have copies of the Club bylaws, GotNews has yet to find another member of the 27-person executive committee who has even seen the bylaws.
“Aside from it being inappropriate for a trustee board not to have bylaws because they can’t do their job of following those bylaws – a tremendous legal misstep – if they don’t have them in their possession, then how can they have adequate time to reflect on the proposed changes?” a Club member told GotNews.
“It’s all a big rush,” one board member said. “It’s just like how they gave us the Club’s annual budget ten minutes after we were elected and expected us to vote on the budget three minutes later. We had three minutes to review a budget for a club we just joined the executive committee of. Now we have three days to review the bylaw changes for bylaws we’ve never seen.”

Three board members have contacted GotNews requesting we look into the matter. When our reporter asked these board members why they wouldn’t just speak up at the meeting, stop the vote from happening, and insist that all Club members receive the bylaws immediately, we found the same tired response, with one member saying:
“They are so vindictive when you speak up. You just don’t understand how nasty it gets if you even ask a question.”
The only person we could get to speak on the record was longtime Club member Allan Stevo, who was removed from the board in January 2017.
“It’s obviously not legitimate to expect a person to vote on a document they’ve never seen. A transparent club would put the bylaws right there on the website for anyone to read – member or non-member. Obviously someone within the Club leadership feels like there’s something to hide,” Stevo explained.
The bylaw changes also appear to be an admission of wrongdoing.
Proposed changes obtained by GotNews show that new revisions would have made legal the removal of seven Trump supporters from the board on January 31, 2017, in what some members now call a “Trump Purge.” The Club came under heavy fire for removing Donald Trump supporters, in violation of their own bylaws.
“Now the exact changes that should have stopped them from throwing us out are being put into place. Clearly they agree they weren’t following our Clubs bylaws when the Trump Purge happened,” a Club member who was involved in the January 2017 incident said.
Another dissatisfied Club member outside a political event recently commented about the Club, declaring “Deb [Coughlin is] a longtime Democrat and Chuckie Schumer supporter. She’s divided our proud Republican Club and is driving it into the ground. What more do you want me to say?”
