The Russian lawyer with whom Donald J. Trump, Jr. met with apparently met appears to have ties to unverified “dossier” circulated by the catlady blog Buzzfeed, raising questions about a possible Deep State set-up.
Media went wild over a mundane, pointless meeting Donald J. Trump, Jr. had with a Russian lawyer with ties to the Kremlin to obtain opposition research on Hillary Clinton. (Of course, they ignored Ukraine trying to help Clinton secure power.)
The lawyer: Natalia Veselnitskaya, who, through a web of individuals including a pop singer and his publicist, wanted to share some opposition research. Trump later said the meeting was simply a “wasted 20 minutes.”
But a DOJ complaint shines lights on possible anti-Trump connections of Ms. Veselnitskaya.
This complaint details the many illegalities and breaches of lobbying procedures by a group that Veselnitskaya worked with—the Human Rights Accountability Global Initiative Foundation (HGRAIF). This group was founded to lobby against legislation meant to combat money laundering.
Shady interest groups are nothing out of the ordinary in the Washington Beltway, but the individuals and companies tied to this group make it stand out amongst the crowd.
Including Ron Dellums, a former Democratic congressman from California. As well as Howard Schweitzer, the former COO of the federal government’s TARP program—and current managing partner at DC lobbying firm Cozen O’Connor Public Strategies. Many other financial and consulting types, such as Chris Cooper of the Potomac Square Group, and Mark Cymrot, a partner at Baker Hostetler, are also listed as individuals involved in the DOJ complaint.
One of the individuals not listed in the HGRAIF filings, but who are involved in the lobbying done by the organization is Anatoly Samochornov, a “Russian-born professional interpreter.” Samochornov, according to this DOJ complaint, was a project manager for the State Department. According to his LinkedIn profile, this was during both the Obama and Bush administrations and presumably under the tenure of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
The aforementioned Chris Cooper also skirted lobbying and foreign agent registration regulations by not listing himself as a lobbyist in the group’s filings.
Veselnitskaya is also listed as an individual heavily involved in the operations of this group. She is portrayed by the media as an individual with an obvious pro-Trump bias.
However, this is cast into doubt by the involvement of one other individual, Mr. Glenn R. Simpson: the founder of Fusion GPS.
Fusion GPS is the private investigation and intelligence firm that employed Christopher Steele, the former intelligence officer who concocted the debunked, so-called “p*ssgate” dossier popularized by CNN and Buzzfeed.
The DOJ complaint claims that neither Simpson personally, or his company, Fusion GPS, filed as a foreign agent (under the Foreign Agent Registration Act) or as a lobbying group, despite their heavy involvement in lobbying on the behest of HRIGAF.
The combination of the Russian lawyer, Ms. Veselnitskaya and Mr. Simpson both having connections many months, even possibly years (as this organization was formed in mid-February 2016) prior to both the Steele/Fusion GPS dossier and now the leak of a supposed meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and Russian-linked individuals casts a heavy shadow of doubt over the veracity of the leaked email’s intent.
Is it possible that the entire supposed meeting was a honeypot set up by hostile government actors, or anti-Trump groups?
