WeSearchr is a crowdfunding site where interested citizens can raise money to fund investigative and advocacy journalism. We’re like any crowdfunding site, such as Kickstarter or GoFundMe, that handles content from across the political spectrum. We are categorically not a Political Action Committee.
Right now we’re less than six months old, so we haven’t broken through to a wide audience yet, and while our content is pro-Trump-heavy right now we expect that to change as we grow the company and break through to the public consciousness. We are a tech startup with an innovative model that frightens the traditional journalism world so we are not surprised to see attempts to threaten us with regulatory attacks. We’re confident our business will withstand this or any other bogus attempts to silence an innovative new voice in journalism.
One of the reasons Pax Dickinson and I started WeSearchr.com is that we judged that the media was totally dishonest. Once again, several lying media members are proving us right. And unfortunately the way they are doing it is by scaring the good Mormon men and women of Utah. Worse yet, ex-CIA officer Evan McMullin is knowingly spreading a lie to scare you into voting for him.
How shameful. How un-Mormon. How CIA. Utah – and America – deserves better.
Pax and I feared that our new media start up, committed as it is to crowdfunding the truth, might make us targets of regulation by the billionaire-backed candidates and blogs. Now it looks like they are smearing us to stop Donald Trump from being elected and to terrorize good Mormon families.
The origins of the smear against my company originate with an admittedly mentally ill former British politician.
Last week Heat Street founder (and former British MP) Louise Mensch accused my business partner and me of running a pro-Trump PAC. She made this claim without any evidence and without even bothering to check from us. Apparently fact checking is a job that only American journalists like us will bother doing.
That a News Corp – where I once worked – media property just asserted that lie without checking is fairly irresponsible and such a claim is frankly libelous. I have alerted Rupert Murdoch and his people and expect a retraction or correction.
Its author, Louise Mensch, has a history of lying, serious drug use, and fornicating. She is a low rent pornographer turned politician and publisher. She volunteered her services to write an ad for Hillary Clinton that cheered how it’s time for women to rule, not with men, but above them. Fittingly she is also close to Arnold Schwarzenegger who cheated on his wife with the maid before endorsing Hillary Clinton. She has given advice to “groupie wannabes” targeted at teen girls.
Mensch, too, has personal problems. Mensch admitted in 2012 that she had taken harden drugs and that they have “had long-term mental health effects on me.”
In 2011, Mensch had been forced to apologize for lying about Piers Morgan in parliament lest she be sued:
She did good work, though taking the attention away from the phone hacking scandal that had engulfed Murdoch’s News of the World, and Murdoch invested in her Heat Street publication, a publication which also seems to be failing.
(For what it’s worth I happen to like Mr. Murdoch who I once met when I worked for the Wall Street Journal editorial page but I cannot understand why he would have someone who has mental health issues editing his publication.)
Mensch has repeated a lie published by Gawker, the site that was brought down by publishing revenge porn, that I defecated on the floor in college when I, in fact, saved someone who was sick from dying. (Gawker and I are currently in settlement discussions. Remember what I said about the lying media?) I have informed Ms. Mensch that she is mistaken but she insists on continuing the libel.
The lie got picked up by Erick Erickson, a Never Trump Republican who has taken money from a group funded by pro-gay marriage, pro-amnesty, pro-war hedge fund billionaire named Paul Singer. The source of funding for Erickson’s new website, The Resurgent, isn’t disclosed.
The relationship between Singer and Erickson is unclear. Erickson told me in Georgia in 2014 that Singer looked at buying his allegedly conservative media property RedState.com but he ultimately sold it to Salem Communications.
Evan McMullin is also funded by Singer, who, like McMullin has a very close family member who is gay. (McMullin’s mother is married to a woman while Singer’s son is married to a man.)
McMullin is trying to muddy those waters. Like his patron Paul Singer, McMullin backed arming the so-called Syrian rebels who I, and other journalists, exposed as anti-Christian terrorists. I’m proud of the work we did exposing shills like disgraced Syria analysts who tried to get America into another war in the Middle East.
As someone who got married in his early twenties to a woman now pregnant with my daughter, I don’t think you should run for president when you’re a lifelong bachelor. McMullin should get his house in order rather than try to get into the White House. At 40 years old he should spend less time in foreign countries killing and more time in the United States meeting Mormon women. I couldn’t imagine life without my family.
McMullin claimed he left the CIA to have a family but he left the agency in 2010 to go work for Goldman Sachs. Then he moved onto Congress. These are not the ideal places to find a beautiful Mormon woman.
I’m also a little sad to see him run with Mindy Finn, who has a history of working for social justice companies that hate Mormons. Finn is a career gal who has put that career over the duties of the most important one: being a mother.
It’s a desperate, sad lie by the McMullin campaign to insinuate that we hate Mormons at WeSearchr.com based upon some tweets that were made in jest.
Here are the facts:
I love the Mormon Church. I hire Mormons. I was married by a Mormon in Alaska in a secular ceremony. My godfather was raised in a Mormon family. I have defended Mormons when they were being persecuted for their religious views in California. I was there when the gay community was hunting you down and I fought back. One of the reasons we formed WeSearchr was to be a voice for the voiceless. We are no more a PAC than Google, The New York Times, or Facebook are PACs.
My business partner Pax Dickinson makes jokes. He’s very funny. I recommend following him on Twitter. Sure, some of these jokes are offensive. So what? We don’t apologize for jokes at my company. The Mormon Church has survived years of persecution by our government. It can survive a few tweets making gentle fun at their expense. All the Mormons I know have a sense of humor.
As for what Utah should do on Election Day? Do what Mormons do best: Choose the Right.
