Congressman Joe Barton (R-TX) announced yesterday that he will not seek reelection to the House of Representatives next year, in the wake of a sexting scandal first reported by investigative journalist Laura Loomer.
Last week, Loomer reported on a lewd photo and video of Barton circulating on social media, which Barton subsequently apologized for. Loomer also revealed that there were more lewd messages yet to be released.
This week, another woman came forward with “highly inappropriate” Facebook messages she received from Barton.
Loomer noted that it is important to call out impropriety in politicians from both parties, lest right-leaning journalists lose credibility and appear partisan. “As a journalist, my marriage to the truth is unshaken by unpopularity, political correctness, or partisan brinkmanship,” Loomer told GotNews. “Last week I brought attention to a video of an elected official screwing more than the taxpayers, and literally exposing himself indecently to a constituent he met through his official government Facebook account.”
Loomer also applauded Barton’s decision to not seek reelection, and argued it “is proof citizen journalism is alive and well in our great nation.”
Journalist and filmmaker Mike Cernovich, who broke the John Conyers sex scandal two weeks ago, observed on Twitter that “it’s a whole new media world and no one understands the implications of it all.”:
Barton is out due to @LauraLoomer, Conyers out soon…..it’s a whole new media world and no one really understands the implications of it all.

Loomer says she hopes Barton – a powerful Congressman first elected in 1986 – can “serve as a lesson to any politicians attempting to use their office for illicit sexual gains.”
