While The Young Turks (TYT) founder Cenk Uygur apologized today for his disgusting comments about women in the past, it turns out he has some serious competition from his own nephew, TYT rising star Hasan Piker, for the distinction of being the left-wing network’s most misogynistic personality. Piker, whose viral videos have been viewed tens of millions of times this past year alone, and whose supposed progressive beliefs on issues like sexual harassment convinced Buzzfeed to dub him “Woke Bae” when it profiled him this May – has a long history of vile, disturbing, and outright bigoted comments directed towards women in politics that rivals Uygur’s, according to a GotNews review of Piker’s Twitter account.
Ironically, the up-and-coming liberal pundit currently presents himself as a champion of feminism and gender equality, but Piker’s past comments towards prominent conservative and liberal women alike paint a disturbingly different picture. Piker’s remarks range from judging women in politics on their physical attractiveness to describing the roles these women play in his own disturbing sexual fantasies. These comments reveal that Piker has a profound – and often creepy – disrespect for women who pursue careers in politics, and suggest the liberal commentator may simply have a deep-seated misogynistic streak in him.
Piker has evidently been employed by the Young Turks Network since early 2014, having previously interned at the outlet. More recently, he has achieved stardom in left-wing circles on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter for his passionate videos on TYT discussing current events from a progressive perspective. However, both before and during his current spell at TYT, Piker has time and time again injected a particularly virulent strain of sexism into his public opinions of various women in politics.
Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was one of the earliest targets of Piker’s sexism. On July 13th, 2012, Piker wrote on his Twitter account “I cannot, for the life of me, get over my Sarah Palin fetish.. #gamechangeismy50shadesofgrey”, bizarrely comparing the popular HBO movie about Palin’s 2008 selection as John McCain’s running mate to E. L. James’ BDSM-themed erotic novel:
The year before, Piker similarly expressed a desire to have sex with former Congresswoman and Republican presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann, asking his followers “Does anyone else think Michele Bachman is extremely hotttt? Id let her ‘tough love’ me all she wants”:
Piker’s propensity to sexually objectify women who pursue careers in politics and subject them such misogynistic comments stretches across party lines: Piker seems to also view former Texas State Senator and Democratic gubernatorial nominee Wendy Davis as nothing more than a sex object. In a series of flagrantly sexist (and very strange) tweets from the fall of 2013, Piker wrote “I don’t know what’s next for Wendy Davis’ political future but I wish her personal future involved a divorce and dating me like tomorrow,” asked a female reporter covering Obamacare whether the law could lead to him receiving a colonoscopy from Davis, and then declared that Davis’ campaign for governor “has got me all hot and bothered,” all within the span of three weeks:
Likewise, Piker subjected United States Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) to one of his characteristically degrading tweets the month before, when he stated his desire to have sex with the feminist champion currently leading the fight against sexual harassment in the legislative branch:
According to a GotNews review of Piker’s Twitter account, it appears the aforementioned sexually demeaning tweets about Bachmann, Davis, and Gillibrand are the only times Piker has ever mentioned those three women (by name, at least) on Twitter, despite the prominent roles they have all played and continue to play in national politics. In contrast, Piker has tweeted about Palin by name just two other times; predictably, one of those tweets also referenced her physical appearance and sex appeal.
Piker continued his sexist, degrading comments towards women in politics – or perhaps just towards Republican ones – until at least last year, tweeting “Yo Ivanka Trump looks hotter everyday wtf is wrong w me #RNCinCLE” during the 2016 GOP Convention. In 2012, Piker had confessed “my lifelong unobtainable dream is to marry ivanka trump”:
As Piker’s viral videos have propelled him to prominence this year, his clips have targeted and mocked no woman more frequently and harshly than conservative commentator Tomi Lahren, whom he has attack in well over a dozen different segments. These videos are often replete with suggestive comments about the Fox News contributor’s physical appearance, or other subtle jibes – about her supposedly not answering his direct messages when she was in Los Angeles as a guest on Real Time With Bill Maher, for example. On March 14th, Piker went as far to describe his videos as “the weekly Tomi Takedown”:
Might have to postpone the weekly Tomi Takedown to Thursday because of these Tax returnssssssssss… Sweeet.
— Hasan Piker (@hasanthehun) March 15, 2017
Given this article’s revelations about Piker and history of misogyny, his anti-Lahren obsession now seems even more troubling. Does his record of sexually disparaging women in politics indicate his “weekly Tomi Takedown” is actually just one more attempt by Piker to disparage a woman pursuing a career in the world of politics (or even just opining on it)?
In addition to these ugly truths about Piker’s misogyny towards female politicians, and the controversy over Uygur’s old sexist posts, TYT has also been recently rocked by sexual assault allegations against its former star reporter Jordan Chariton, whom the progressive network fired last month after an internal investigation into his past conduct. Chariton continues to profess his innocence, and has pledged to sue The Young Turks for their alleged mishandling of the investigation and subsequent decision to fire him.
It is unclear whether Piker’s sexist, vile, and degrading comments towards women in politics constitute permissible conduct at TYT.
