Update: The Los Angeles Times says that the Darren Wilson fund stopped the donations, not GoFundMe. We will have more as it develops…
Apparently GoFundMe opposes raising money for Darren Wilson but has no problem raising GoFundMe money for two Black Panthers who assaulted a police officer.
Late last night GoFundMe appears to have stopped allowing charities to raise money for the police officers of Ferguson, MO.

GoFundMe has been the target of progressives who don’t like the idea that Darren Wilson, who has fled the state, might have need of some financial support.

Here’s an observation by a GotNews.com reader:
GotNews.com will feature these kind of analyses as time goes on and eventually, pay our contributors.
There have been people complaining to GoFundMe and trying to get Wilson’s fundraiser stopped, and when that didn’t happen, they have been passing around a petition online and saying GoFundMe shouldn’t be entitled to their 5%.
The problem I have is that they are stating Wilson isn’t entitled to a fundraiser because he “murdered” Michael Brown and because “GoFundMe is profiting off racially-motivated donors”. The double standards are getting ridiculous. If evidence shows Wilson may be at fault, then he is still entitled to due process which is exactly what Brown’s supporters would want if the situation were reversed. There were some nasty comments left by donors on the GoFundMe site, but that is beyond the Wilson fundraiser’s control and the comments have been removed. From what I can tell, they have tried to keep things as positive as possible (from looking at their facebook support page) and they are the ones that keep receiving death threats. I wouldn’t be surprised if the fundraising page for Brown had nasty comments against Wilson on it as well, but it appears that all of the comments have been taken down.Anyway – one of the arguments being made against GoFundMe is that it violates their terms of service (Your own terms of service prohibit “items that promote hate, violence, racial intolerance, or the financial exploitation of a crime.” If Darren Wilson is charged, then it would stand to reason that these fundraisers are in violation of your terms, specifically “financial exploitation of a crime.”).
So does that mean that they feel Brown’s fundraiser is in violation if it’s found that he committed felony battery on a law enforcement officer? Also, very ironically, the female Black Panther that took the video of Piaget’s interview, Dacia Polk, also has a GoFundMe for her legals fees from earlier this year when she said she was a victim of police brutality (news said police stated said she tried to bite officers, etc.). But she’s still raising money to help with a crime that she has already been charged with. Here are links I had saved regarding GoFundMe and also regarding Dacia Polk if you need them.
Looks like they removed the ability to leave comments and can’t see any old comments
Summary of claims for Petition against GoFundMe
- GoFundMe is profiting off racially-motivated donors
- Some of whom are celebrating the police killing of Michael Brown
- Join campaign demanding that GoFundMe return these profits and take down Darren Wilson fundraising pages
- GoFundMe takes 5% of every donation processed, meaning the company has already made more than $15,000.
Here’s the letter we’ll send to GoFundMe executives on your behalf. You can add a personal comment using the box provided:
Dear GoFundMe co-founders Brad Damphousse and Andy Ballester, and Kelsea ofGoFundMe Customer Happiness, I write demanding that you return any profits from donations for Darren Wilson on your platform. Further, please take down any related fundraising pages. Your own terms of service prohibit “items that promote hate, violence, racial intolerance, or the financial exploitation of a crime.” If Darren Wilson is charged, then it would stand to reason that these fundraisers are in violation of your terms, specifically “financial exploitation of a crime.” GoFundMe should return any money it has made from Darren Wilson fundraising pages, and take them down immediately. Profiting off the killing of Michael Brown is not okay. Profiting off of racially-motivated donors is not okay. These types of disturbing fundraising efforts have no place on the world’s #1 personal fundraising site. Sincerely, [Your Name] Source
Dacia Polk – 25 yoa (born 1988)
Black Panthers affiliation
St. Louis Chairman Dacia Polk (Google search has info on a radio talk show she was scheduled to be on representing the Panthers)
- GoFundMe for legal fees
Misleading? (I only really thought about this after reading again today about the petitions to stop Wilson’s fundraiser and complaints against GoFundMe)
The information in the GoFundMe description states she has “no prior arrests for any violence, and no criminal history”, but she possibly had a warrant at the time she was arrested (if it’s her it looks like it began as a minor traffic violation with a failure to appear in court)
March 15, 2014
Court case number: 14SL-CR03246
Per GoFundMe, between her and Rashid, being charged with 6 felonies
Charges: Resisting/Interfering with arrest, detention or stop
- Same name, same year of birth, not confirmed same person for sure
- Possible traffic violation of some sort, hearing scheduled
- 2009 – Warrant issued
- 2013 (November) – Guilty plea
- Failed to appear at hearing
- Warrant issued 12/23/13
- 3/21/14 – warrant served (possibly had warrant when arrested so warrant was “served” during that arrest as well)
So if that is the case, although it seems like minor offense, she would still have had a criminal history so what they wrote on the GoFundMe is possibly not true.
