As I write this in Guatemala feckless Joe Biden is making a pitch here to the presidents of Central America to give them $3.5-5 billion to “create jobs” to reduce emigration to the U.S.
But are they funding them or paying bribes to the corrupt governments?
Here are the pitchees:
-Guatemala-former president returned last week from federal prison after serving a short sentence for embezzling $70.5 million. Other government embezzlements include the social security trust fund, the congressional retirement funds, military funds via the secretary of defense, etc.
-El Salvador–former president under arrest for embezzlement.
-Costa Rica-not one but two former presidents convicted of taking bribes.
-Honduras-one of the highest murder rates in the world.
-Nicaragua, a self-described Communist, fellow traveler of Castro and Chavez heading a country so corrupt that the tolerant Dutch have eliminated aid.
Guatemala is in the midst of a constitutional crisis caused by the government’s running out of money, as more and more Guatemalans refuse to pay taxes for fear that the money will be stolen.
And we want to give them billions more to steal?
The only possible rationale is a cynical political (US) hope that Central Americans in the U.S., a UN-estimated 1.5 million from Guatemala alone, will ultimately vote for Democrats.
