CNN published a front page article on White House advisor Steve Bannon’s 2010 comments on Islam today, that omitted and ignored basic facts about Islam, in order to imply Steve Bannon was a bigot that doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
In fact, Bannon’s statement on Islam was 100% accurate and CNN totally failed to confirm it, then implied he was lying. This is called lying by omission and the lying mainstream media is very good at it!
The article, titled ‘Steve Bannon in 2010: ‘Islam is not a religion of peace. Islam is a religion of submission” was written by CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski and appeared on the front page of cnn.com today:
CNN’s Kaczynski quotes Bannon as saying in 2010 that:
“Islam is not a religion of peace. Islam is a religion of submission. Islam means submission.”
Kaczynski follows Bannon’s accurate statement on Islam with this statement that is supposed to be taken as a fact:
“The Arabic root of the word Islam means “peace.” Muslims believe that they are in a state of peace when they submit to the will of God.”
The clear implication is that Islam is a religion of peace and that Steve Bannon is a bigot who is either lying or doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
In fact, the liars here are Andrew Kaczynski and CNN — they are lying by omission:
“Islam” is an Arabic word that literally means “submission” or “surrender”. Steve Bannon is 100% right. “Islam” literally means “submission” in Arabic. “Muslim” literally means “one who submits” or “one who surrenders”. Bannon is completely correct and instead of confirming this for the reader, CNN implies Bannon is lying.
This is not only not a matter of debate, it is an accepted linguistic fact. One minute of research on Wikipedia could have confirmed this for Kaczynski and the liars at CNN:
The “Arabic root” that Kaczynski is referring to is a grammatical concept in Arabic, which uses three-consonant “roots” to create large amounts of words that are related in meaning.
The Arabic root of “Islam” can mean “peace”, but it can also mean “submission”, “wholeness”, “safeness” and a few other things.
CNN’s Kaczynski is deliberately citing obscure Arabic grammar to avoid printing the obvious and accepted fact that Steve Bannon’s statement is completely correct, and that in fact the literal meaning of “Islam” in Arabic is “submission” or “surrender”.
It is 100% correct to say “Islam is a religion of submission”, since the literal Arabic meaning of “Islam” is “submission” or “surrender”. Why can’t CNN and Andrew Kaczynski admit this basic fact about Islam?

UPDATE 1/31/2017: CNN has updated the article by Andrew Kaczynski to reflect the true, accepted definition of “Islam” as of this evening, following the publication of this GotNews article calling them out.
The original article, which we archived here to be available forever, said: “The Arabic root of the word Islam means “peace.” Muslims believe that they are in a state of peace when they submit to the will of God.”
The updated article, also archived here and now available on CNN’s website, says instead: “The word Islam means submission, and a Muslim is one who submits to God. The Arabic root of the word Islam means “to be safe” and is connected to the word “peace.””
It also includes an editor’s note that says: “Editor’s note: This article has been updated to clarify the definition of Islam.”
Maybe CNN and the rest of the lying mainstream media should hire GotNews to be their Islam and Arabic language consultants!
