New York Magazine has confirmed two GotNews scoops from July 21st and July 25th of last year and identified White House Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah as an anti-Trump saboteur who somehow landed a prestigious job in the administration through former Chief of Staff and RNC Chair Reince Priebus.
According to an exclusive report from New York Magazine’s Olivia Nuzzi, Shah called then-candidate Trump “a deplorable” in the wake of the “Access Hollywood” hit job. While working at the RNC, Shah also sent a private message that described the release of the tape as “some justice.” It is unclear why a top RNC staffer would celebrate a bad news cycle for Republican presidential nominee.
On top of these revelations, New York Magazine also obtained emails from December of 2015 between Shah and a top RNC researcher in which Shah requests opposition research done on Trump. The clip Shah ordered dug up aired in a Jeb Bush attack ad three days later. It is similarly unclear why a top RNC staffer would be picking sides in the Republican primaries; several DNC staffers had to resign after their leaked emails confirmed they were pulling strings behind the scenes to favor Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders in the Democratic presidential primary.
On July 21st, 2017, GotNews first identified Shah and former Assistant Press Secretary Michael Short as anti-Trump forces in the White House. Citing White House sources, GotNews broke the story that Shah and Short were trying to undermine President Trump’s “war room” by leaking to The Daily Beast. A White House source told GotNews that instead of working alongside President Trump to improve his communications shop, the two RNC alums called the President “the biggest obstacle to the crisis-management plan.”
Just a few days after GotNews outed the two as leakers, Short was fired. On July 25th, 2017, GotNews reported that then-White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci forced Short out for leaking – and GotNews again identified Shah as an anti-Trump leaker.
Shah’s future at the White House does not seem in jeopardy for now, as White House Communications Director Hope Hicks told New York Magazine that she has confidence in Shah.
