Facing growing calls for her resignation, Democrat Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty requested this morning that the House Ethics Committee launch an investigation into her handling of a shocking abuse scandal involving her former Chief of Staff.
“I believe it is important for the House Ethics Committee to conduct its own inquiry into this matter,” Esty said in a statement released this morning. “In seeking this inquiry, I want to clarify whether there was any wrongdoing on my part.”
In May of 2016, Esty’s Chief of Staff at the time, Tony Baker, allegedly physically abused and threatened to kill another staffer. According to the Washington Post, Esty was made aware of Baker’s actions within a week, but chose to keep him on her payroll for three months, and eventually wrote him a letter of recommendation that got him a job with a gun control non-profit.
The Connecticut Democrat has resisted growing calls for her resignation from Democrats and Republicans alike, and her request for an ethics investigation into herself may help mitigate her ongoing public relations nightmare.
In November, Senate Al Franken initially called for a Senate Ethics Committee investigation into himself after various reports accused him of sexual misconduct.
However, on December 6th, the majority of his Democrat colleagues in the Senate publicly called for his resignation, prompting him to announce the next day that he would be resigning in the coming weeks. Franken officially resigned his seat in early January.
It is unclear whether any of Esty’s colleagues in the House will similarly call for her resignation. According to WTVA, members of the House of Representatives received a “dear colleague” letter this morning from Esty offering an explanation of her actions in the scandal.
