CNN host Jake Tapper has both a foul mouth and a history of verbally abusing young journalists, according to a 2009 New York Magazine article titled “Jake Tapper Is a Tool” by Jessica Pressler.
Pressler starts by observing how “there are only a handful of people who live up to the sophomoric term ‘tool’ quite the way ABC reporter Jake Tapper does.”
In addition to noting how Tapper verbally abused a college-aged reporter, Pressler claims that Tapper also once “handed a Salon reporter a wad of his chewed gum, telling her it would be ‘worth something someday.'”
The New York Magazine article includes a broken link to a City Paper description of the verbal abuse incident. However, an archived version of that story titled “Tapper Gored?” is still available online, and it makes several serious claims against Tapper, who was evidently upset with an upcoming article about him:
“On Tuesday, Philly Mag provided City Paper with an advance copy of ‘Beer and Loathing,’ a brief article by young George refugee Sasha Issenberg on Tapper’s new book on the election, Down and Dirty: The Plot to Steal the Presidency. The advance came with word that Tapper was mighty pissed off over the story. ‘He was concerned from the outset,’ says Issenberg, a Swarthmore College junior, who originally intended to write the piece for the since-folded George. Issenberg admits that in a piece he did for George last summer he was hard on Tapper’s television work during the presidential conventions.”
Tapper reportedly called Issenberg “in a snit” and verbally abused the young reporter with profanity, and even allegedly threatened his future career. The article continues with the following passage:
“But after hearing from a Philly Mag fact checker, Tapper called the reporter in a snit. Issenberg says Tapper called him ‘a fucking pussy’ and said, ‘It’s not going to be good for your career.'”
According to the article, Tapper admitted to verbally abusing Issenberg – even doubling down on the insult – but denied threatening the younger reporter’s career:
“Tapper admits to calling Issenberg a fucking pussy — ‘Because he is,’ he tells City Paper— but denies making a threat. ‘How am I going to threaten his career?’ Tapper asks.”
The City Paper‘s account of the incident is seemingly corroborated by an April 16, 2001 Howard Kurtz piece in the Washington Post, which claims: “As Philadelphia’s City Paper reported at the time, Tapper dressed down the reporter, Sasha Issenberg, with words that can’t be printed here and also called the magazine’s editor to complain.”
As GotNews has previously reported, Tapper’s early career in journalism was built on a sexist, fat-shaming Washington City Paper piece he wrote about his personal experiences dating Monica Lewinsky.
