Rolling Stone magazine founder Jann S. Wenner gave up the controlling stake in his company Sunday evening, three years after GotNews correctly identified rape hoaxer Jackie Coakley and exposed journalist Sabrina Rubin-Erdely’s fraud.
The New York Times calls the University of Virginia rape hoax “a botched story… about an unproven gang rape” at the beginning of its article, and it’s not until several grafs down the Times admits it’s completely false:
Rolling Stone suffered a devastating blow to its reputation when it retracted a debunked 2014 article about a gang rape at the University of Virginia. A damning report on the story by the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism cited fundamental journalistic failures. The article prompted three libel lawsuits against Rolling Stone, one of which led to a highly publicized trial last year that culminated with a federal jury awarding the plaintiff $3 million in damages.
Erdely’s Rolling Stone article about Coakley’s three-hour long gang rape on top of broken glass at a fraternity party sparked a national uproar. Shamefully, timid editors refused to push back against the hysteria, so GotNews ran the op-ed questioning crucial aspects of Coakley’s wild claims, identified Coakley, exposed Erdely’s history of victim-shopping, and more.
GotNews’ reporting was used throughout the trial against Rolling Stone.
The magazine was also forced to give a payout to the fraternity brothers it smeared.
“Rolling Stone has settled with the damaged undergraduate students of Virginia Alpha Chapter in Phi Kappa Psi for $1,650,000.00,” a source told GotNews in June.
From printing lurid lies fueling the “rape culture” panic to glorifying a terrorist on its covers, Rolling Stone’s decline is well-deserved.
